Related Services

Under the guidance of the SELPA local plan, Tehama County SELPA organizes and provides access to the following services for eligible students.   Due to the size and scope of our rural area, all schools share services to ensure any student eligible for any related services has access.  

 

Adaptive Physical Education 

Provides Direct physical education services provided by an adapted physical education specialist to pupils who have needs that cannot be adequately satisfied in other physical education programs as indicated by assessment and evaluation of motor skills performance and other areas of need. It may include individually designed developmental activities, games, sports and rhythms, for strength development and fitness, suited to the capabilities, limitations, and interests of individual students with disabilities who may not safely, successfully or meaningfully engage in unrestricted participation in the vigorous activities of the general or modified physical education program.

 

Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services 

Provides a variety of service and training from full inclusion in general education to direct instruction in a full day program. Specialists participate in the assessment, development and implementation of the IEP for students with hearing loss. Instructional focus includes language, social skills, academic instruction and self advocacy skills. Students in our programs use a range of language modalities including spoken language and sign language. Students have access to Hearing Assistive Technology Systems (HATS) to support access for those who use amplification devices. Consultation is provided to schools to create accessible campuses for all students with a range of hearing loss as well as instructional methods and accommodations to support students in the classroom. Specialists coordinate with student providers outside of the education system to create school access plans to ensure safety and educational benefit across school settings. Specialists work with Communication Assistants and Educational Interpreters to support instruction and provide access in the classroom.

 

Occupational Therapy Services

Provides occupational therapy services to students in a safe, comfortable environment. Conducts assessments of students to determine need for occupational therapy. Participates and supports in multidisciplinary team assessments. Acts as a resource to school personnel in interpreting occupational therapy services. Plans and develops therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and used in students' education programs. Provides consultation to the educational system regarding student needs, professional needs and system needs in order for the system to achieve its goals and objectives. Facilitates education and professional development for staff in districts and programs. Monitors the occupational therapy program goals by teaching and supporting staff who are involved with the implementation of the intervention procedures.

 

Orthopedic Impairment Services

Provides specially designed instruction related to the unique needs of students with orthopedic disabilities, including specialized materials and equipment.  Works closely with other service providers working with students with low incidence and mobility impairments.  Assists in the evaluation for services, development of student transition plans, programs, and goals.

 

Physical Therapy Services

Evaluates students’ functional performance in activities that are meaningful, curriculum oriented, and applicable to daily life routines. Assesses students' gross motor and development skills (e.g. perceptual-motor, motor coordination, sensory development, muscle strength, etc.). Consults with students and families for the purpose of enhancing student access and mobility in school and in school related activities. Develops, implements, and provides on-site training to a variety of school personnel in the use of necessary student equipment. Identifies students’ abilities and educational, developmental, or functional needs. Participates and supports during the Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Identifies structural issues for the purpose of removing barriers for students with physical limitations and /or identifying appropriate adaptive equipment and /or devices needed. Develops intervention plans that support students’ goals, objectives/outcomes, and implements this plan in the least restrictive environment. Assists in the evaluation for services, development of student transition plans, programs, and goals.

 

Specialized Academic Services (SAI) 

Adapting, as appropriate, to the needs of the child with a disability the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction to ensure access of the child to the general curriculum, so that he or she can meet the educational standards within the jurisdiction of the public agency that apply to all children.  Mild/Moderate Educational Specialists provide SAI to small districts and charter LEAs in Tehama County.  Moderate/Severe Educational Specialists provide SAI in regional operated classrooms in K-12+ environments.  

 

Speech and Language Services

Services provide remedial intervention for eligible individuals with difficulty understanding or using spoken language. The difficulty may result from problems with articulation (excluding abnormal swallowing patterns, if that is the sole assessed disability); abnormal voice quality, pitch, or loudness; fluency; hearing loss; or the acquisition, comprehension, or expression of spoken language. Language deficits or speech patterns resulting from unfamiliarity with the English language and from environmental, economic, or cultural factors are not included.

Services include: specialized instruction and services, monitoring, reviewing, and consultation. Services may be direct or indirect including the use of a speech consultant.  Speech Pathologists provide a variety of services in our SELPA, to small districts, as well as to regional programs. 

 

School Psychologist/Behavioral Services

These services, provided by a credentialed or licensed psychologist pursuant to an Individualized Education Program (IEP), include interpreting assessment results to parents and staff in implementing the IEP; obtaining and interpreting information about child behavior and conditions related to learning; planning programs of individual and group counseling and guidance services for children and parents.  These services may include consulting with other staff in planning school programs to meet the special needs of children as indicated in the IEP.  Psychological services required by the IEP are expected to supplement the regular guidance and counseling program.  School Psychologists provide a variety of services in our SELPA, to small districts, as well as to regional programs.  This includes assessments, counseling, and behavioral interventions.  

 

Visual Impairment/Orientation and Mobility Services

Provides individualized instruction, remedial instruction, and accommodations/modifications for the purpose of addressing students' academic and social needs. Participant on the IEP team to design individual educational programs for special education students who require orientation and mobility services; conduct on-going reviews of the IEP and monitor progress. Assesses students’ using formal and informal assessments for the purpose of identifying educational needs including curricular, social and equipment needs; monitor, evaluate and report on the progress of students. Confer with parents and professional staff for the purpose of addressing problems and/or concerns related to the education of the visually impaired student. Counsels students and their parents for the purpose of facilitating/supporting vocational planning, social adjustment, orientation and mobility needs, and agency/support service awareness. Provides Braille instruction and training in other special learning media for the purpose of assisting students in accessing classroom curriculum. Provides large print, Braille, taped, and recorded materials required by the classroom teacher for the purpose of assisting students in accessing classroom curriculum and to participate socially. Transcribes/enlarges classroom assignments into Braille/large print for the purpose of assisting students in accessing the curriculum.
